Hello everyone and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Here is a little special treat that Rich and I have put together for you. This is only the first half of the story since this is all we had time to put together before Halloween.

On a side note, PHWonline has changed their website again, so none of the links to the old comics are correct anymore. I will fix all the links soon.

Well... 5 pages edited in one day, posted 3 hours later than I planned on, and I have been up all night... but by God it is done and here it is.

Rich and I worked really hard to get this issue done fast... and by God we were not about to allow work, school, obigations, family nor any kind of personal life get in the way.

Be on the look out for something special from Rich and I before the month is over.

As for Issue #5... I am not sure anything can be said to prepair for this issue, other than here it is...

This issue turns a new page in the making of the series. Richard Boisvert has joined me in making the series as the primary poser.

With the current drought of comics due to a recent Steam update for Half-Life 2 that wrecked G-mod, we decided to post the first part to Issue Zero.

You will notice in the comic, pages 2 and 3 run off the edge of the page. That is because it is meant to be a 2-page splash. If you LOOK HERE you can see what the pages look like together.

A new Apostasy T-shirt is available on the PHW Store. This is even better than the last one. It shows the everyone's favorite shot from Issue #1 where the guy gets thrashed by the Combine Soldier.

Cool stuff. I just ordered two of them for myself... one for me and one for my daughter.

All proceeds from this shirt go to keeping the site PHWonline.com up and running. The site is constantly in a state of trouble cost-wise. So, I would urge anyone who cares to get on over there and get something.

Site slightly mangled...

I just realized (per a friend of mine Bill) that the site does not look so hot for people who have I.E. All of the stuff, that should be in the right panel, is at the bottom and HUGE.

I am going to see what I can do about the problem, but I have no idea really how to make these templates and just am sort of editing on the fly. So that is probably how it got screwed.

In the mean time, the news section on the left works fine for I.E... if you want to use the right-side menus, they look fine in FireFox... besides, if you are using I.E., you should switch anyway... go HERE.

Prince of Persia 3...

Finally I can post about a project that I have had to keep under my hat for a while now.

I have been working with Ubisoft to create a comic "template" for their upcoming release of Prince of Persia 3. The template allows the fans to edit their own stories and add text. The project is still being worked on and more pages will be posted soon.

It looks like things have gotten pretty much fixed. The problem I was having with my computer seems to have gone away. The culprit? The winner is... bad RAM chip. I will be looking into getting it replaced later. For now, I need to everything reinstalled so I can get back to work.

Things go from bad... to worse...

I have been battling with my PC for a few weeks since it seems to reboot every 5 - 10 minutes. I have tried to reinstall windows a few times and have come to the conclusion that it is probably the Asus motherboard of my PC. Having no real money to replace really any of the parts, I am not sure I am going to be able to contine the comic.

I will keep you all posted on these horrid developments.

EDIT (1:00 am): Seems it might be the built in RAID controller (which I do not use), uninstalled the drivers and disabled in the BIOS. (Keeping my fingers crossed!)

EDIT (Tue 9-6-05, 10:30 pm): So far so good. It does seem to be the RAID controller. I have not had a reboot all night. Going to re-install World of Warcraft tonight to test it further. WoW caused almost as many reboots as HL2 and Gmod did, so I think this will give me a final answer.

EDIT (Wed 9-7-05, 1:15 pm): Okay... so it is not the RAID controller. Now it seems that the problem is one of the sets or my Corsair XMS RAM. I put a second set of 512s in about a month ago, these I suspected right away and they seemed to not be the problem. Last night I took the old set (which I have had for 9 months) and put the new ones in, and it ran WoW for a couple of hours. It still rebooted once but this is a vast improvement. Running some memory tests today.

EDIT (5:00 pm): So much for that. It is not the RAM, almost certainly the motherboard that I spent over $300 on. Not sure where this leaves things at this point.

EDIT (Sun 9-11-05, 2:30 pm): I have a motherboard to test with. I am also getting a new, better heatsink today (I need one reguardless). I have noticed that when I crank my A/C it doesn't seem to happen. While Intel processors do not reboot due to overheating, perhaps the motherboard is doing it to protect the PC. More later.

EDIT (Sat 9-17-05, 6:00 pm): Okay... not much posted recently because I was so frustrated I had to take a small break. Here is an update... I have solved the overheating problem with a CoolerMaster heatsink and fan... problem is it still has done it a few times. Good news is, that it is way less that it was before. Also, I have started testing the RAM chips one at a time. All of the reboots since the heatsink install have been memory related errors. Seems we are getting close. More coming!

EDIT (Sun 9-18-05, 11:45pm): I think I have found the bad RAM chip.

1up.com Gmod coverage and Interview...

Continuing their massive coverage on Half-Life 2 all this week, 1up.com today posted an article, called "Modding the Source" about Garry's Mod and the Gmod community, of which I am a proud card caring member of.

Page 2 of the article, talks about "The 12 Wonders of City 17", and has an interview with yours truly and I am flattered to have made the top of the list. Quite amazing to me considering the incredible things some people are making. The page also features a trailer for a 1 issue prequel called "Apostasy: Zero", that I am working on. Have a look.

Recently, I have been talking to Jessica Chobot for a bit about doing an interview for her WTF column on IGN.com.

So last week I was going through some old graphics files, looking for something. I ran across these old photos I saved from an old friend Leanne's blog, who I knew when I lived in Chicago. I have a tendency to save photos people post online and not organize them at all, so they are scattered all over. I saw this one of Leanne, who married an ex-coworker I used to work with in Chicago And what did I see on the left...

I kept thinking to myself my goodness, that looks like Jessica Chobot... and I am thinking back... Leanne HAD a friend named Jessica... bottom line, this is her.

Where the HELL is Issue #3?!!

I know a lot of you have been asking this. Well without further delay let me say that "yes" Apostasy will continue and give an explanation for the current delay...

The last issue was done very, very quickly and more or less was a little burnt out so I decided to take a small break (notice I said small). I also felt that the issue was done too fast and contained a number of errors that could have been avoided if I had taken more time. Alas, other forces come into play causing other havoc... more or less, I lost my job. On top of this all, I was moving at the end of July. So I had to basically move and look for employment which had to take the forefront in my life.

Rest assure, I found employment working for a major electronics retailer. Not the kind of money I am used to or free time, but it is something. Work on Issue #3 is getting ready to resume as well as a couple of other surprise projects I am working on that I will be able to fill you all in on hopefully soon.

The Next Level
It's nerd nirvana! Video games and comics! But actually quite good...

PC GAME blockbuster Half-Life 2 may have left libraries, Dungeons and Dragons gatherings and re-enactment societies empty as geeks camped at their PCs, shooting the tar out of pretend, pixellated alien beasties. But at least spoddy Illinois resident James Brandt turned his love of the game into something creative. Using a manipulating programme called Garrys Mod, James - or "Brashfink" as he prefers to be called - has clearly spent days setting up his own in-game scenes, screen-grabbing the results, and then fashioning them into his own cartoon called Apostasy. The comic, now on its third edition, follows three characters whose story interweaves with the game's narrative. It's great and lives here: www.phwcomics.com. Oh, and for God's sake don't strain your brain trying to work out the story in the comic here. We've just picked the best bits that look nice...

Line Up Change...

Allen Evans switches his role on the series in the forthcoming issue #3 from Editing to writing. Allan will become the primary writer for the "Jack" plot line of the series. I had always planned on him doing some writing, but had planned on him doing both writing and editing, but...

Michael K Clements, PHWComics Founder, creator of several comics including "Ban Wars" and an all around good chum of mine from across the pond has joined as Editor. He will do his best to try to help keep my error-laden self at bay. Now if we can just keep the British and American spellings straight.

John Evers, also joins up as a writer. Unlike Allan who is helping me write as well as script, John will be helping me with overall story high-concept and continuity with what is known from the games. He is very well versed in the Half-Life storyline from both games and all of the expansions. Among his other talents as a Philosophy grad student, we works as a bartender in the bar where I wrote the basic story outline. The first night I met John, we both drank and talked about Half-Life for over 2 hours. On top of it all too boot, the guy looks just like Gordon Freeman.

Issue #3 Update...

After a much needed mini-vacation after the ridiculous deadline I put on myself for Issue #2, I thought I should post and state that Work for Issue #3 is now full steam. When will it be released? When it is done. I am not posting deadlines because all that does for me is create stress.

On top of that, I have a paid project I should be getting underway soon that I will have to focus most of my attention on. Hopefully I will be able to release information on that soon. Oh... and don't worry. This doesn't mean that Apostasy is going away. I just need alter my focus slightly.

Mossman at Black Mesa & more...

I have been getting so much response on this, I decided I needed to make a post explaining a few things I feel about the story of the game Half-Life.

1) The Metro Cops are cyborgs (or brainwashed)...
No, I do not believe this at all. My main proof of this is Barney. I feel that it would be almost impossible to infiltrate them if they were. On top of that, whats to say that he infiltrated in the first place? He might have just been assigned the job, after all... he was a security officer before all this anyway, right? The cyborgs are the soldiers. If fact, I am not sure the soldier ever were human so to speak. I feel they are something created by the Combine, not unlike the lifeforms the Combine used to make striders and gunships. Which brings up another idea that some think... I believe these things are not piloted. They are also cyborgs that are controlled through some kind of network -- this is why when Jack finds the A.P.C. he says it is doesn't have a steering wheel like the ones in the city. It is driven through some other means.

2) Civil Protection is not Overwatch...
This I mulled over for a long time and no, I am not 100% sure of this. The main reason I came to my conclusion is from the Half-Life Saga Story Guide site. I feel overwatch is bigger than just Civil Protection... C.P. is a part of Overwatch if you will. Furthermore, I feel that the soldiers are not controlled by Breen. He can ask for assistance, perhaps get them to do some things, but they are controlled by the Combine (through the network I mentioned before). Where he has direct control of Civil Protection. I believe Overwatch is a term that Breen came up with for his portion of earth's control.

3) Mossman did not work at Black Mesa...
Again, I don't remember anything that says directly that she did not work there. There was a statement that she was jealous of a position that Freeman got there. To me this suggests that she did work there, but did not get some kind of promotion. My main reason for this line of thinking is that Mossman would not know about a position at a top secret facility unless she worked there herself. In fact, in my story i expand this idea a bit. Mossman is a few years older than Gordon, and was trying to get that position, but Gordon got it straight out of grad school and she is resentful of this.

If someone can prove different (esp. on the Mossman one) I would like proof (and just saying "no, it is this way" is not proof). It is easily changed (I can just make Mossman say "No, I did not work there, but I know some that did").

If anyone at VAVLe can sound off on this, that would be great (and no, just saying "Hi I work at VALVe" is not proof either, or course). I want this to be as close to game continuity as it can be, but at this point this is my philosophy and where the story is going.

Okay, let me start by saying I am sorry. We all knew when I first stated the deadline I was making for myself that there was probably no way I was going to finish it by then. The good news is that if I hadn't tried to meet this deadline, the issue probably would not have gotten done until next month. I am pretty sure I can get it done this week (I am shooting for the 20th now).

As an apology, I am offering up a pre-release of the first 5 pages for you all to look over in the meantime while you wait. Keep in mind when you check it out that there are still some things that my editor pointed out that I have not fixed yet, I just decided to do this at the quite suddenly tonight... so bare with me that these are not totally done yet.

Allan joins up...

Another good friend of mine and fellow screenwritier Allan Evans has joined up as the official Editor of "Apostasy." This is great seeing how as I cannot spell anything properly without spell check (this is probably evident several places in this Blog -- sorry).

Allan will most likely be eventually lending his writing talents to the series at some point also.

Issue #2 Update...

Well, it is 5 in the morning and I finally got some serious work done on Issue #2. Between work and the whirlwind that happened right after Issue #1's release, it took some time to get back to work. Quite frankly, I am shocked at how quickly it got around. I though that if anything, it might happen after a few issues. I appreciate all the positive responses, they mean a great deal to me.

As for issue #2, I have decided to seriously shoot for May 15th, and try to stick to a once a month schedule. In truth, I seriously doubt that I can get all that needs to be done by then, but I work better with a deadline in my head so with luck it won't be too far off. This schedule is going to be difficult, but it is all of you and your encouragement that has made me make this decision to work extremely hard on Apostasy.

Featured on G4TV's "Attack of the Show"...

Much to my shock, my comic has been featured on G4TV's "Attack of the Show" on today's Episode #5061.

The fact that it was on the show is pretty ironic. First off, the show (in it's original form called "The Screen Savers" is where I found out about Garry's Mod that I use to make the comics. Not to mention the fact that I am currently banned from posting on the forums there for complaining about them firing Alex Albright who a lot of people didn't like, but he cracked me up.

Oh well, I hope there is no bad blood between us. I still watch the show all the time.

Murphy Rears His Ugly Head...

I knew everything was going too smoothly on this project. I knew something had to horribly slow everything somewhere... I just didn't know when...

Last Sunday I contracted probably the worst flu I have ever had in my life. I have been battling it for six days and it is just NOW starting to show signs of leaving. Needless to say, with April Fool's Day here and gone in one hour and 5 pages left still to do, issue #1 will not be released on time. I guess it shouldn't really be a shock to me. I mean, who chooses April Fool's Day as a release date anyway?

The Half-Life Saga Story Guide

The Half-Life Saga Story Guide is a site that gives a lot of the backstory that is not overly explained in the game Half-Life 2. It contains a timeline, some expanded info and a FAQ. A lot of the information comes from the book Raising the Bar (This book is incredible. It shows concepts, backstory, the voice-actors and more).

A lot of people are curious as to why almost no exposition is in the game itself. I think the guide above explains this best in thier FAQ...

"... they assume you already know. That'd be like you having to inform a U.S. soldier fighting in Afghanistan about the events of 9/11. You assume he knows what's going on, because (obviously) it happened in his lifetime, and not only that, he's already fighting to rid the world of the people who planned the attacks. So you'd naturally assume that he was aware of recent history. This is precisely why everyone in City 17 assumes that Gordon (the player) also lived through the Portal Storms, because they changed the world so much that everyone was affected by them."

For anyone who has not played the game Half-Life 2 and is curious about the story you can see a pretty good breakdown of the events in the game at the Half-Life Fallout website in this article. It may help you to see and understand some of the things that will weave with the story in the comic. Keep in mind if you are still planning on playing the game on PC or the upcoming release on Xbox later this year, you should not read this, as it contains spoilers.

Minor Setback

For the past 24 hours I have been battling with Garry's Mod, Half-Life 2 and my video drivers. The 3 of them have been giving me fits by crashing my PC whenever I am trying to work. I have gotten very little done over the past week because I have not been able to get the thing to work for more than 10 minutes at a time.

Anyway, I think I fixed the problem (crosses fingers) so hopefully I can finish up pages for teaser #2.

Comic Update...

Been getting some good work completed the past couple of days. Page 5 and the cover has been retooled (check the earlier post for Teaser #1 for the updated pages). Finished pages 6 and 7 and have started Page 8.

Brad joins up...

I have asked my friend and co-writer of several things, Brad Pyott to assist in story creation. The script outline for the entire series (graphic novel) is about 2/3 done.

Each "issue" of the comic will be about 20-25 pages and I will try to release them once a month. The entire story will be well over 100 pages.

Target completion date for issue #1 is April Fools Day (hopefully the obvious joke is not true).

A teaser of the first 5 pages should be up soon.

Apostasy Comic

I have started yet another enormous project. Only time will tell as to whether I actually get it done.

The project is a comic based off the game Half-Life 2 by Valve Software. This game is quite simply the most amazingly engrossing story that I have ever seen in a video game. Needless to say, it got me inspired, but I had no idea what I could really do.

Along came G4's television show, The Screen Savers with a segment about a "Mod" for Half-Life 2 called Garry's Mod. The Mod allows you to place and pose ragdoll models from the game. Well... and obviously the idea from there just kind of fell into place.

The comic will be called Apostasy, and it will follow 3 characters through a story that happens around the same time as the game... in fact the story will interweave with the game story.
